When do you use “We’ When do you use ‘I’ so you engage people and inspire them or make them feel included and important.

There’ s lots to consider when expressing yourself. Get the overview of effective expression and learn the Most Important Rule for Effective Communicating.

If you want to be a great leader you will have to get good at expressing yourself effectively to engage others and influence them.  

When things get intense and ugly, how do we detach so we can calm ourselves, and approach with healthy reason and effectively communicate?

If you want to be a great leader you will have to get good at detachment and Timing when intensity and/or ugliness trigger in an interaction.

In the video below I share a technique and thought pattern for detachment.

One time I had to detach and postpone a conversation was when I was fired at 28 years old.   

The one time I was fired in my life was a difficult period. I was the lone provider. My wife was a stay at home mom and we had 2 kids. Being fired however, become a turning point in my career. I accessed my resilience and started my own business. It was a cellular phone business that I started from the trunk of my car and grew to 3 stores and 3 million in annual revenue before I sold it. I started the business with zero money and no investors. My first business cards were put on a credit card and I leased a car that I worked from.

How to inspire people from other cultures, and all your people and teams, to the next level so you shine as a leader in your organization.

First of all, inspiring and motivating people to work harder, safer and more productively has very little to do with culture or where someone comes from. If your prejudice gets in the way it will hinder you so follow what I talked about last week to communicate cross culture then move on to today's five steps which inspire and motivate 99 % of people. The first part of inspiring across cultures is to do the 3 things I talked about last week.

1. Find a feeling of acceptance for difference inside yourself.
2. Be inquisitive. Ask more questions before sharing opinions. Asking questions is critical if you want engagement.  Ask about them, their interests, hobbies, children, family, dislikes. Show genuine interest in them.
3. Look for common denominators. Develop a healthy relationship of mutual respect.

How do you engage someone who is different than you? Communicating cross-culture, maintaining respect and inspiring/motivating people in all walks of life to work hard and be effective.  

I live in Edmonton, Canada. We are a multicultural society in North America. Learning to work with, inspire and motivate people from all places and walks of life is key to success.

There are three really important things to do to engage people with differences that I’ll help you with today.

1. Find a feeling of acceptance for difference inside yourself. How do you do that?
2. Ask more questions before sharing opinions. Asking questions is critical if you want engagement.  What questions do you ask?  
3. Look for common denominators.

4 things to do when communicating with your teenagers and young adult children that are withholding information, and remember they’re all doing it.

1. Release the judgement. Consider that 99.99999% of people withhold information.

2. Most people SKOWL. Secret Keep, Omit, Withhold, or Lie. We do it to keep ourselves and others safe. Do you do it? You likely have. Think of family, co-workers, religious friends, acquaintances. You’ll likely find people you’ve SKOWLed with on some level.

   I haven’t met a person who doesn’t — I’m 57 and have met thousands of people from many walks of life and different cultures at different ages. It seems the younger the person, the less they SKOWL. As we become teenagers we’ve learnt it well in most cases. We all have different fears. release the negative judgement and honor their decision to SKOWL and keep safe.
